EMP: Testing Results & Final Thoughts

May 11th, 2010 Pipes Comments off

The project has now been released to friends on Facebook for them to test the project and find any bugs that they have encountered.  The main issues are more aesthetic such as seeing through assets and being caught on models stopping the player from moving.  I have been told that adding the cinematic’s in the final build has really helped to make the game look more professional and has aided in guiding the player through the project to completion.  The following images are what have been returned to me from testers.

Here we can see through the rear of the rock which needed amending.

The rope at the end of the wheel protrudes too far out.

The jump across the drop was possible without the vehicle which I did not want.  So the planks are moved backwards to make this impossible.

Jump Over Drop

The project has been a large amount of work but as the project continued it changed from trying to make realistic models to trying to create a full demo level by myself.  This is where the challenge really began and 14 hour days were not uncommon to reach the conclusion I wanted to achieve.  I found that the process was slowed by watching as many tutorials as I could and participating regulary in the UDK forums.  http://forums.epicgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=366

I have had some amazing positive comments as I progressed and various emails from You Tube viewers asking technical questions and giving encouragement.

The following is a rather amazing email from a viewer in Moscow!!!

“Hellow.
My name is Edgar Protsko, I am architector from Moscow.Your work is very well and amazing me.
But I have some questions, please answer me.
When I create simple bsp like cube or wall and convert it to static mesh(with simple material on it,with planar it,with creating unic UV and use true coordinate index and hi light map resolution-all what i have done is regular and true) I saw strange ugly thing-when I place two or more duplicate meshes or differet meshes that i made near(very near-face to face but offcourse without overrading)it looks like little shadow noise-how to remove it?You must know it because You master).

(sorry for bad English))”

I have also befriended a Spanish team of developers who asked for technical questions and now I shall be helping then beta test their games also.  This has been a great experience which I hope to pursue as a career in modelling and level design.

EMP: User Interface, Sounds & Enhanced Fluids

April 7th, 2010 Pipes Comments off
The user interface is now in place and a soundtrack taken from the royalty free DVD Pro Scores from the guys over at Video Copilot has been decided.  The loading process is now complete and the water fountain fluid has been replaced with a Fluid Actor which enables better interactivity and realism.
Ambient sounds are also in place such as the water trickle, outdoor ambience, gate creak and cable car station various noises.  The song Bean Bag I created many years ago can now be heard from the radio in the cable car station….I knew I could get it into a project somewhere!!!! :)
Enjoy people and look out for the next video soon.

EMP: Portfolio Website Complete

March 21st, 2010 Pipes Comments off

I have been working very hard on the EMP project trying to hit my deadline of completing all the landscape modelling and lighting ready for character rigging and programming which begins and proceeds all the way through April.  I have been very aware of the importance of trying to find employment in my chosen field (which is 3D asset creation for gaming) and II am aware that a portfolio website is very important to showcase the past 3 years.

This in mind I have spent a week collating all the imagery and applications I have created and designed a basic Flash driven website which is now on-line at www.stopout.co.uk.

I am not entirely happy with the design but time is a critical factor at present so I cannot spend too much time on the website.  I endeavour to put more time in to the site after the EMP is complete.

In retrospect I am very pleased with my body of work, even if some old 3D models are a little cringe worthy!  I have dated each project which allows my progress to be tracked by prospective employers.

I am working hard to my own GANTT chart and I continue to work daily to complete the modeling of the project and this has also seen me documenting less on the blog than last semester.

I hope to rectify this situation from this point.
